Archaeology

Film Schedule and Questions for Winter Semester

Lecture Summary:

This week we looked briefly at the history of archaeological research in British Columbia. We noted the roles of Franz Boas, Charles Borden, and the establishment of the archaeology department at SFU as key to the establishment of a BC archaeology. Moreover, we discussed a framework for understanding some of the different motivations for archaeological work in BC. This framework includes three different orientations: 1) academic archaeology; 2) cultural resource management archaeology; and, 3) indigenous archaeology. This scheme will replicate itself when we talk about cultural anthropology in BC.

Much of the lecture component of this week’s classes revolved around a review of the key archaeological sites and artifacts found in BC. We used the article by Roy Carlson as a guide for understanding what he calls the ‘cultural traditions’ of the early, middle and late periods of BC prehistory.

Be sure to know what a cultural tradition is for an archaeologist and how that differs from ‘culture’ for a cultural anthropologist.
